Volume

All you need to know about VOLUME...

What is volume?
The volume of an object is the amount of space it occupies.

Apparatus used for volume measurement:
-beaker
-measuring flask
-burette
-pipette
-measuring cylinder

S.I. Unit:cubic metre(m3)
Other units:

-cubic kilometre(km3) -cubic centimetre(cm3)
-cubic millimetre (mm3)

Accuracy of:
measuring cylinder-1cm3
burette-0.1cm3
pipette-fixed volume of 25cm3 or 50cm3
measuring flask-fixed volume of 250cm3 or 500cm3.

Meniscus reading:
The menicus of most liquids curve downwards.correct way of reading it:
- to position the eye at the same level as the meniscus
-mark correspoding to the bottom of the meniscus is taken as the reading
-The meniscus of mercury curve upwards.
-Reading the meniscus correctly minimise parallax error.

Measuring the volume of irregular-shaped objects
Small irregular-shaped objects
- fill a measuring cylinder with water and record the initial volume, V0cm3
- immerse the object into the measuring cylinder gently so that it is completely covered with water. Record the
new volume, V1cm3
-The volume of the object is the difference
between the two volumes recorded.
Large irregular-shaped object
-fill the displacement can with water
-Remove the beaker when the water stops flowing.
-place an empty
measuring cylinder below the spout of the displacement can.
-immerse the object
into the displacement can gently so that it is completely covered with
water.
- when the water stops
flowing into the measuring cylinder, observe and record the volume of water
displaced by the object and collected in the measuring cylinder.
- the object
should not dissolve in the liquid.

We can use formulae to measure the volume of regularly shaped solids

Formulae to find the volume of regular-shape objects:
cube: V= l3
cuboid: V= lbh
cylinder: V= pi'r2h
cone: V=1/3pi'r2h
sphere: V=4/3pi'r3
